In 2023, more than 1.8 million people applied for disability benefits through Social Security’s two programs, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Effective June 22, 2024, Social Security began considering work going back 5 years instead of 15 years.
Recalling past work details can be difficult and confusing for many workers, potentially causing them to give up on the process. Job titles, dates of employment and job duties are often difficult to obtain from past employers. Decreasing the relevant work period from 15 to 5 years will make it easier for people to accurately report their work history. According to Social Security, “this new rule will lessen the burden and time our applicants face when filling out information about their work history and will make it easier for them to focus on the most current and relevant details about their past work,” said Martin O’Malley, Commissioner of Social Security. “It also improves the quality of the information our frontline workers receive to make decisions, improving customer service, and reducing case processing time and overall wait times.” See Social Security press release.
