Chronic Liver Disease and Cirrhosis
Chronic liver disease is a progressive condition that typically develops in four stages:
- Hepatitis
- Fibrosis
- Cirrhosis
- Liver failure
What Is Cirrhosis?
Cirrhosis occurs when scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue, impairing the liver’s ability to function properly. This damage accumulates over time and can result in serious complications. As the largest internal organ, the liver performs several critical tasks, including:
- Removing toxins and medications from the body
- Producing bile to aid digestion
- Storing sugar for energy
- Synthesizing new proteins
When scar tissue builds up in the liver, it restricts blood flow, reducing the organ’s ability to perform these essential functions. In severe cases, the liver can fail entirely, leading to life-threatening consequences.
Common Causes of Cirrhosis
The most frequent causes of cirrhosis include:
- Hepatitis and other viral infections
- Long-term alcohol abuse
- Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), often linked to metabolic syndrome caused by conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure
Social Security Disability and Liver Disease
If you have been diagnosed with cirrhosis or another chronic liver condition, you may qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. The Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates disability claims for chronic liver disease under Listing 5.05 of the Blue Book. This listing outlines specific medical criteria that must be met for automatic approval.
Even if you do not meet the exact criteria under Listing 5.05, the SSA will assess your claim to determine whether your condition imposes significant limitations. If your symptoms prevent you from performing your past work and there is no other work you can reasonably perform based on your age, education, and work experience, you may still qualify for SSDI benefits.
