If the Social Security Administration (SSA) determines that you meet the medical criteria to qualify for Social Security Disability benefits, you may be entitled to receive health insurance as well. The type of coverage you will receive will depend on the disability program that you qualify for. Generally speaking, Medicaid and Medicare are the two types of health insurance programs that will be available to disability claimants as part of their benefit.
MEDICAID
In most States, if you are an SSI recipient, you may be automatically eligible for Medicaid; an SSI application is also an application for Medicaid. In other States, you must apply for and establish your eligibility for Medicaid with another agency. In these States, SSA will direct you to the office where you can apply for Medicaid. Please see the Medicaid website at www.medicaid.gov/ for consumer information.
MEDICARE
If you’re getting Social Security disability benefits, you’ll get Medicare automatically after getting disability benefits for 24 months. If you have ALS (also called Lou Gehrig’s disease) you’ll get Medicare automatically as soon as you start getting disability benefits. In both cases, follow the path on this page, but keep your timing in mind. Please see the Medicare website at www.medicare.gov/ for consumer information.
